Surface mount device (SMD)

SMD stands for surface-mount device or surface-mounted component. These components are soldered to the surface of circuit carriers using two or more contact surfaces. SMD components are designed to be placed on the circuit board in printed solder paste using automatic placement machines. Hand soldering is not intended due to the small size and close spacing.

Typical sizes of SMD components according to the JEDEC standard are shown in the following table. The code is composed as follows:

  • The first two digits indicate the length of the SMD component
  • The last two digits indicate the width of the component

The imperial codes are usually used in inches.
